What You Need To Know

  • Your project site will be separate from your campsite.
     
  • Patrols and project leaders will return to their campsites for lunch
     
  • There will be no stoves or tables on the project site, for this reason, there will be coffee and tea provided in Cubland during project times for LEADERS ONLY.
     
  • Upon arrival the leader will check in and must verify registrations AND team composition in Council Hall. Once complete your group will be directed to your site. **If the Contact leader is going to be late, please ensure the other leaders have all the necessary details**
     
  • You WILL be walking ALL your personal and troop gear from the road or parking lot to your campsite and back out on Sunday.
     
  • Project gear will be able to be dropped off at the project site.
     
  • There will be NO vehicles allowed on site or on the project grounds.
     
  • Everything that comes in goes out – That includes ALL garbage.
     
  • There will not be any fires on your site. Designated areas only.
     
  • NO pets will be allowed in camp. All pets will be denied access.
     
  • Be Prepared – Poison Ivy is a concern at this time of year.
     
  • This year crest will be a two-part crest like last years.
    Patrols will have to earn the centre part.

Patrol Leader Notes

Meeting: The Patrol Leader must attend a Patrol Leader’s meeting at Council Hall (Fireside) on Friday evening at 9:00 pm. At this meeting you will be given information regarding the camp rules and format. However, you will receive your medallions on Saturday morning.

Projects: On Saturday morning you are responsible to make sure your patrol assembles at your subcamp headquarters at the assigned time to be escorted to the project sites. During the day you MUST participate in the projects throughout the entire project area. There will a special crest awarded based on full participation throughout the day. You will be required to check-in with your subcamp staff at 12:45 at your Subcamp HQ to travel to Opening as a Subcamp.

IMPORTANT: You are competing in projects all day, regardless of weather conditions, so dress appropriately. Uniforms are not needed during the competition

Scoring: Patrols are being marked out of ten. The marking scheme is as follows:
Sign In = 2, Sign Out = 2, Completion of Project = 2, and Teamwork = 4.
When signing in / out, use your unit #, be polite, give the Scout sign and identify yourself.
Do not forget to thank the leaders for running the project and allowing you to participate. Courtesy as always, please. Your patrol will only receive your first score per project and qualifying participation is only based on that first score.

Start Now!! To be well prepared for Operation Alert, you and your patrol needs to work on a multitude of skills including knots and lashings; compass; fire safety; environmental issues; camping skills and of course Teamwork. A good attitude and well performing team is important to your success. Don’t forget to catch the magical Harry Potter theme with your decorations and costumes!! Jump on the Hogwarts Express and join your fellow wizards in Hogsmeade on Saturday night.

Important Notes: There is poison ivy throughout the wooded areas of this campground. Stay on the paths and cleared areas / walkways. This is a self-contained troop camp; therefore you must be prepared with your own water.
Remind your Troop Scouters, that medical forms and health cards are a necessity. Prior to leaving and issuance of crest, Subcamp chiefs will inspect all sites.

Troop and Project Leader Notes

Meeting: The Leaders must attend a meeting at Council Hall (Stage Side) on Friday evening at 9:00 pm. At this meeting you will be given information regarding the camp rules, format and anything new or Q&A.

Projects: Every group will have a project. On Saturday morning you are responsible to make sure your group is ready by 7:45 a.m. to accept participants to your project. All projects stop at 11:45 and 5:15 and are considered completed for scoring. At lunch (before opening at 1:00 pm) youth and leaders will be returning to their campsites. Projects will continue after lunch and opening ceremonies.

IMPORTANT:

  • The patrols can free flow throughout the entire project area in the morning and afternoon
  • If you notice too many units at your event, encourage them to go to another project in the interim.
  • Competing in projects will be all day, regardless of weather and uniforms are not needed during the competition.
  • Patrols will only receive the FIRST score at any project.
  • Keep the patrols moving as there is a special crest based on participation that they can qualify to receive

Scoring: Patrols are being marked out of ten. The marking scheme is as follows:
Sign In = 2, Sign Out = 2, Completion of Project = 2, and Teamwork = 4.
There are no bonus points, and no half points. Ensure you see the Medallion & record that Unit Number (not the name!) with the score.
These sheets will be collected at random times throughout the day.

Start Now!! To be well prepared for Operation Alert, you and your group need to work on a theme based challenge requiring a multitude of skills that could include knots and lashings; compass; fire safety; environmental issues; camping skills and of course Teamwork. We will again be awarding the “Best Project” as judged by our panel.

More Prizes!! Each of the Sub Camps will also be judging and awarding the “Best Theme Group Participation”. Jump on the Hogwarts Express, and don’t forget to decorate your House.

Important Notes

  • Please see your Sub Camp staff for any assistance or problems, they will look after you, or get some one that can.
  • This is a youth competition camp, and as such, no adults should be accompanying the youth during their participation. If there is a specific need, please advise the Project Coordinator or the Registrar ASAP.
  • There is poison ivy throughout the wooded areas of this campground. Stay on the paths and cleared areas / walkways.
  • Use of “Walkie Talkies” is NOT permitted as they interfere with our communications and emergency issues. They will be confiscated & returned to the group on Sunday.
  • This is a self-contained troop camp; therefore you must be prepared with your own water.
  • Remember that 2 copies (you & the Patrol leader) of medical forms and health cards are a necessity.
  • Prior to leaving and issuance of crest, Subcamp chiefs will inspect all sites.

Where Is Camp Samac?

Camp Samac is located in north Oshawa, Ontario. It is approximately 40 km east of Toronto; 60 kms southwest of Peterborough. Access to the campground is through the Conlin Road entrance.

From the West:
 - Hwy 401 West, exit at Thickson Rd.
 - Follow Thickson North 6 km to Taunton Rd.
 - Turn right at Taunton, follow 4 km to Simcoe
 - Left on Simcoe, follow to Conlin Rd.
 - Turn right, follow to camp entrance (275 Conlin Rd. – right side)

From the East
 -
Hwy 401 East, Exit at Harmony
 - Follow Harmony North 6 km to Taunton
 - Left on Taunton 2.5 km to Simcoe
 - Right on Simcoe, follow to Conlin Rd.
 - Turn right, follow to camp entrance (275 Conlin Rd. – right side)
